Snider Draperies began in the late 1940’s as a home based business with Olivia Snider supervising 16 women doing in-home sewing for Sears, with mother-in-law Jo Snider assisting. Husband Charles joined both women and together decided they could be more profitable as a retail business.
They purchased Edith’s Slipcovers in 1953, which was located in the still existing red building at the SW corner of SW 152nd in Olde Burien. After a brief move into a basement unit at the shopping complex in the 200 block of SW 152nd, the Sniders brought a house on 153rd and built the present retail store front and workroom in the early 1960’s. The little house is still there and has hosted a variety of businesses.
Charles and Olivia owned and operated the shop until retirement in 1987, when longtime employees Sharon Bixby and Evella Kuxhaus purchased the business. The name was changed to Snider Burien Draperies at the suggestion of Charles Snider.
Snider Burien Draperies acquired Elaina’s Interiors in West Seattle, in July 1999.
